Anxiety and fear of public speaking. Why and where to start if you want to get rid of it?

To one degree or another, almost all people participate in some kind of public speech in the direct or indirect sense of this phrase. Of course, not all people in their lives find themselves on stage in front of an audience of thousands, but almost everyone had to speak in front of the collective, to answer the manager’s question in the face of their colleagues at least once. So much for your publicity, here’s your speech. This is where some have to face their fear of public speaking.

Some, by the way, have quite adapted themselves to this fear and have learned to live with it without correcting fear in any way, but by adjusting their lifestyle. If, for example, work from home, leaving only to the store and visiting trusted friends, then the likelihood of encountering a public speech will be reduced to zero. But is this option suitable for everyone? Of course not.

In addition, this option can lead not only to excessive restrictions in life, but also to a decrease in the opportunity for the growth of social status, who chose this option for solving the problem of a person, and also can interfere with the growth of income. For example, they offered a promotion, and because of fear of public speaking, the man refused, having found out that at the new job “you will need to go to people and broadcast something to all of them.”

Here it already makes sense to think, look for some other ways to resolve the issue with your fear, in which you would not need to hide from people. How to get rid of the fear of public speaking? First you need to understand why there is a fear of public speaking. This is important, because depending on the reasons and methods of solving this problem may differ.

Here I will clarify some more nuances. Psychologists call the fear of public speaking glossophobia. It can also be called stage fright. According to some reports, up to 95% of people are afraid of performing. That is, almost all people are in one way or another. Here you need to keep in mind that with a slight severity of symptoms, it is difficult to call this phenomenon glossophobia, or stage fright, and thank God, people in whom this is expressed to such an extent that sweating, and trembling of the voice, and a strong heartbeat immediately occur, and tremors of the lips, and nausea, and … So, those who manifest all of the above at once and at once, and expressed, exactly not 95 percent of the world’s population.

In most cases, we can talk about anxiety before speaking in public. Further, in order to make my text more correct and convenient for most readers to perceive, I will use the expression “anxiety before a public speech”.

So why is there anxiety before public speaking?

The causes of this anxiety are usually social factors, for example:

Childhood bullying.

Problems admitted in parenting in a person’s childhood.

Negative attitude of teachers at school or negative attitude of peers towards the child in the same period.

Dominance of negative assessment of the child by parents and teachers.

And so on and so forth.

All this destroys the child’s notion of his adequacy and becomes the basis of low self-esteem in a child, and then an adult. Here is a man standing before going on stage, but in his soul he has the thought, “I can’t!” This is me, to put it mildly, describing what is happening in his soul! And what does he want to go to the stage after that?

Anxiety and fear of public speaking Why and where to start if you want to get rid of it

In this photo I am in the background of the Lower Duden waterfall in the city of Antalya, Turkey. I remember watching huge masses of water flying from a height into the sea, I remembered one client who described his condition before a public speech with a step from a waterfall down … Can you imagine what physical condition he experienced before just speaking to a meeting of about 20 people large some of which were people whom he knew for a long time? Obviously, this state was clearly inadequate to the degree of tasks that he had to solve at this meeting.

He would at least get to a psychologist with this, but sometimes low self-esteem will create anxiety before contacting a specialist who can help.
